AIDS and HIV Cases and Rates (CA only)

Summary: AIDS and HIV cases by year of diagnosis and AIDS and HIV cases per 100,000 persons

This database reports AIDS and HIV cases diagnosed and reported, and AIDS and HIV cases per 100,000 persons on June 30 of each year.  The data do not reflect any resulting mortality. The number of cases each year are inferred from cumulative data, which contain some inconsistencies for some counties.  For example, Amador County cumulative HIV cases in 2011 were reported at 33, but at 31 in 2012, implying a decrease of two cases.  In such cases, new cases are reported as negative numbers.  In addition, the Office of AIDS re-set the number of HIV cases to zero in 2006 and therefore reports a lower cumulative figure than on this database.  This database does not re-set the number of HIV cases to zero in 2006, and instead maintains cumulative to date data.  Per capita figures are based on multi-race population data from the U.S. Bureau of the Census, which are also available on this site.
