This database contains the number of births by demographic characteristics of parents, birth and fertility rates, birth weights, delivery type and payment, and level of prenatal care.  Data are available at the county level.  Data are not available for all combinations of categories and areas.

Birth and fertility rate calculations vary slightly over the periods 1989-2009 and 2010-2013 because of changes in demographic methodologies by the U.S. Bureau of the Census. In short, birth counts in the first period reflect births to Black, White, Hispanic, or all mothers, as defined by the Census Bureau.  In the second period, birth counts reflect births to mothers in different demographic groups: Black alone, White alone, American Indian/Alaska Native alone, Asian alone, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone, or Two races in combination.  Users should exercise caution when comparing birth counts, birth rates, and fertility rates over these time periods. This table contains a detailed description of birth and fertility rate calculations.
