Summary: Number of licensed physicians and surgeons and the rate per 1,000 residents

This database reports the number of licensed physicians and surgeons and the rate per 1,000 residents in June of each year.  The data exclude licensed physicians outside of the country.  Data include all active-license Medical Doctors (MDs) and fee-exempt licenses.  The category, Total (includes out of state), reflects physicians and surgeons who are licensed in California, but do not live in the state. 

 

The rate per 1,000 residents from 1990 through 1999 is based on Jan. 1 population data from the California Department of Finance.  The rate per 1,000 residents from 2000 to the present is based on Jul. 1 population data from the Bureau of the Census.  The rate of Physicians per 1,000 persons for the category Total (includes out of state) is based on total state population.
