Summary: Number of registered automobiles, buses, trucks, motorcycles
This database contains the number of registered automobiles, buses, trucks, motorcycles, and total vehicles. Publicly-owned vehicles include federal, state, county, and municipal vehicles, but excludes vehicles owned by the military. In many years, registration numbers are estimated, including recent year highlights below:
- Numbers are rounded.
- Many states do not maintain records on publicly owned motorcycles. Total may not represent an accurate count of the total number of publicly-owned motorcycles.
- Federal vehicles for 2011 reflect 2009 data.
- 2010 private and commercial buses figures are estimates
- In 2011 and 2012, Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming did not report registrations; instead, annual transaction data are reported.
- In 2011, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina did not report registrations; instead, annual transaction data are reported.
- In 2011 and 2012, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Rhode Island did not report active registrations since they offer multi-year registrations; data are estimates.
- In 2012, Florida, did not report active registrations since they offer multi-year registrations; 2012 data are estimates.
