Summary: Vehicle miles traveled by system and road type

This database contains highway vehicle miles of travel by functional system (rural, urban, and total) and highway category, including interstate, other freeways and expressways, other principal arterial, minor arterial, major collector, minor collector, and local.  Vehicle miles are reported in millions.  Mileage for rural minor collector and rural/urban local functional systems is estimated by states based on a model or other means and provided.  Mileage for all other systems is estimated from state-provided data in the Highway Performance Monitoring System.

  • Indiana data exclude 788 miles of Federal agency owned roads in 2007 and 2008 and 770 miles of Federal agency owned roads in 2005
  • Indiana, Minnesota, and Texas revised their adjusted urbanized area boundaries and/or functional classifications in 2008
  • Minnesota figures in 2007 exclude 437 miles of local government owned roads
  • New York 2005 figures reflect 2004 data
  • Indiana, Nevada, and New Hampshire figures in 2004 reflect 2003 data
