This database reports individuals granted asylum affirmatively and those granted asylum defensively by country of nationality by Fiscal Year (Oct. 1-Sept. 30). Affirmatively granted asylum occurs through a USCIS asylum officer.  In contrast, asylum may be granted defensively during removal proceedings before an immigration judge of the Executive Office for Immigration Review of the Department of Justice.
