The database contains gross federal budget debt, equal to debt held by the federal government plus debt held by the public.  Total debt held by the public equals debt held by the Federal Reserve plus other debt held by the public.

Data from 2014 to 2019 are estimates.  The database does not include debt figures from the transition quarter from 1976-1977 when the federal government amended its Fiscal Year start and end dates.  Years indicate Fiscal Years, currently Oct. 1-Sept. 30.
